What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?

    15 January 2026

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making a brand something AI systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews can find, verify and choose to cite when answering a question. It's the AI-era counterpart to SEO: where SEO optimises for a ranked list of links a person clicks through, GEO optimises for being the fact an AI system states, or the source it names, inside an answer the person never has to click past.

Why does GEO exist as a separate discipline from SEO?

Because the two systems work differently under the hood. A search engine matches keywords and link authority to rank a list of pages. A generative engine synthesises an answer from multiple sources at once, and it has to decide, in real time, which sources are trustworthy enough to draw on and repeat. That decision leans heavily on signals SEO never had to account for: does independent, reputable coverage corroborate this claim? Is the same fact consistent across every place the brand appears? Is the content structured clearly enough to extract without ambiguity?

A page can rank well in Google and still be invisible to an AI system's citations, and the reverse is also true. They're related disciplines, not the same one.

What actually influences whether an AI system cites a brand?

    Three things, in practice:

    1. Structure. Clear claims, defined entities, a genuine FAQ section, and consistent facts across every public profile make a brand's own content easy for an AI system to extract and verify. This is the part most GEO guides focus on almost exclusively.
    2. Independent corroboration. An AI system doesn't just take a brand's word for its own credibility. It weighs what independent, reputable sources say, the same signal that has always driven traditional PR. A claim repeated across multiple outlets an AI system already trusts is far more likely to be repeated back than the same claim made only on a brand's own site.
    3. Consistency over time. AI systems retrain and re-crawl. A brand that's cited once and then goes quiet loses ground to competitors who keep earning fresh, corroborating coverage.

Most agencies selling GEO today treat it as purely the first item: an on-page SEO exercise with better headings and a tidier FAQ block. That work matters, but on its own it only gets a brand halfway there.

Is GEO the same thing as AEO?

In practice, yes, with a difference in framing rather than substance. Answer engine optimization (AEO) is often used specifically for winning direct-answer surfaces like Google AI Overviews and featured snippets, while GEO is used more broadly for visibility across conversational AI systems. The underlying work, clear structure, verifiable claims, real third-party corroboration, is the same either way. A brand doesn't need two separate strategies for the two terms.

    How is GEO actually measured?

Not by rankings or click-through rate. The practical method is to run a fixed set of real buyer questions, the ones a brand's actual customers would ask, across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude on a consistent schedule, and log whether the brand is mentioned, whether it's cited as a source, and how it's framed relative to competitors. This is a monitoring discipline, not a one-off audit, because AI answers shift as models update and as new coverage lands.

Can GEO be done without a PR function?

Some of it, yes: the structural work (clear entities, a genuine FAQ, consistent facts, an llms.txt file) doesn't require earned media. But the corroboration layer, the independent coverage that gives an AI system a reason to trust a claim rather than hedge on it, is fundamentally a media relations outcome. That's the part a pure SEO-led GEO service typically can't deliver, and it's the reason White Ocean Media treats AI visibility as a PR discipline as much as a technical one.

The direct answer, for anyone who read this far

Generative engine optimization is the combination of making a brand's own content easy for an AI system to extract, and giving that AI system independent, credible reasons to trust and repeat what it finds. Structure without corroboration gets a brand ignored by AI systems more slowly. Corroboration without structure gets a brand's own claims garbled when an AI system does try to cite it. Both matter, and most of the market is currently only doing one.
