By earning coverage on the small set of sites Gemini actually draws from, because Gemini cites far fewer sources per answer than ChatGPT does, which makes each one more valuable and the field more concentrated. Semrush's 2026 AI Visibility Index, built from 126 million U.S. AI search prompts collected January through April 2026, reports that ChatGPT cites an average of 15 sources per response while Gemini cites an average of 3. A brand with one weak mention in a ChatGPT answer can still appear. In a three-source Gemini answer, it usually can't.
This is a different question from how to show up in Google AI Mode or how to appear in AI Overviews. Those are Search features, built on Google's ordinary search index. The Gemini app, the standalone assistant at gemini.google.com and in the Gemini mobile app, is a separate product that decides on its own, query by query, whether to search the web at all.
How does the Gemini app decide whether to search the web?
Through an optional step Google calls grounding. Google's own developer documentation on Grounding with Google Search describes it as a tool that lets a Gemini model "provide more accurate and up to date responses" by drawing on current public web content, available for the model to call rather than something it always does. In the consumer Gemini app, that surfaces as a Sources button. Google's support article on Gemini Apps sources states that Gemini "may provide links to sources and related content," and that when no such button appears under a response, "Gemini provided no links for that response." A model can answer entirely from what it already knows, with nothing to cite at all.
That same support page describes a separate double-check feature, available for most languages but not for every response type, which uses Google Search to flag statements as likely similar to, or likely different from, what Search finds. Google is explicit that a highlighted link "is not necessarily what the Gemini app used to generate its response." The two features look alike but answer different questions: one shows what Gemini drew on, the other checks a claim after the fact.
Which sites does Gemini actually cite?
A small, repeating list, dominated by sites that are not the brand being discussed. Ahrefs' Brand Radar tracking of Gemini, based on more than 3 million U.S. queries across all topics and updated September 2, 2026, puts Reddit at 28.5% of citations, the single largest share of any domain, with YouTube at 14.6% and Wikipedia at 8.8%. No other domain in Ahrefs' top ten clears 3%: Walmart (2.8%), Forbes (2.7%), Edmunds (1.9%), Healthline (1.8%), Kelley Blue Book (1.8%), PCMag (1.6%) and Target (1.6%) fill out the rest, each a category-specific authority rather than a general news outlet.
Three things follow from that distribution. First, Reddit, YouTube and Wikipedia alone account for more than half of Gemini's top-cited sources by Ahrefs' measure, so a conversation about your brand happening on Reddit carries real weight whether or not you participate in it. Second, the long tail below the top three is thin and specific: Edmunds for cars, Healthline for health, Kelley Blue Book for valuations. If your category has an equivalent trusted reference site, that is likely where Gemini is already looking. Third, a company's own site does not appear anywhere near this list, which matches what Muck Rack's citation research found across AI platforms generally: the large majority of what gets cited is third-party coverage, not brand-owned content.
Does that mean you should try to get mentioned on Reddit?
Carefully, and not by posting about yourself. Reddit's own citation share in ChatGPT fell 86% in four days in August 2026 after a licensing dispute interrupted OpenAI's access to Reddit's data, which is a reminder that a platform-level dependency like this can disappear without warning for reasons that have nothing to do with your brand. Gemini's reliance on Reddit is a current fact, not a stable one.
What actually works is the same earned-media discipline that applies everywhere else: genuine discussion of your product in relevant subreddits, driven by real users rather than seeded accounts, is the kind of content that shows up when Gemini grounds a response. Coordinated or disclosed-as-paid posting is both against Reddit's own rules and the kind of thing that, once discovered, becomes a worse story than the one you were trying to tell.

Why does a 3-source answer matter more than a 15-source one?
Because exclusion is more total. Semrush's index also found that only 36 global brands maintained top-100 visibility across all four platforms it tracks (ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode) in every month of the study, and that 45% of marketing leaders said they cannot accurately measure their brand's visibility inside AI-generated answers at all. A narrow source count is a reasonable explanation for why so few brands hold consistent visibility: there is simply less room in the answer.
The same study found a real payoff for treating this as one discipline rather than two: organizations that fully integrated SEO and AI visibility into a single workflow reported increased AI-platform traffic or leads 81% of the time, against 36% for those running the two separately. Our guide to AI visibility tools covers what the tracking side of that integration looks like in practice.
How does this compare to getting cited elsewhere?
Differently enough that a single playbook will not cover all of it. Microsoft's Copilot runs on published, rules-based eligibility criteria you can check against your own HTML. Perplexity is built around live retrieval and freshness. ChatGPT's citation behavior is inferred from observed patterns rather than published rules, and now cites roughly five times as many sources per answer as Gemini does, per the Semrush figures above. 5W's separate study of citation sources, covering 680 million citations across platforms, found differences in which domains dominate on which engine, consistent with the Reddit-heavy, narrow-list pattern Ahrefs finds specifically inside Gemini.
The practical read: Gemini is not a smaller version of the same problem as ChatGPT. It cites fewer sources, draws disproportionately from Reddit, YouTube and Wikipedia, and will show no sources at all when it chooses to answer from its own training. Earning a place in that narrower set means earning coverage, or a real, organic presence, on the handful of platforms it actually trusts, not optimizing a company blog for an answer engine that may not search the web for that query in the first place.
The direct answer, for anyone who read this far
Gemini cites about a fifth as many sources per answer as ChatGPT, so there is less room to appear and each citation matters more. Check whether your category has a Reddit presence, a YouTube presence or a Wikipedia entry worth earning, because those three sites account for more than half of what Ahrefs finds Gemini citing, and recognize that many Gemini answers will cite nothing at all and draw entirely on the model's training instead. That makes durable, earned coverage, the kind that gets referenced on Reddit and written up by category authorities, more valuable here than almost anywhere else.
